NADRA Marriage Certificate (MRC) — Online Check, Registration Process, Fees & Verification (2026 Guide)

Urdu infographic showing 6-step process to get NADRA Marriage Registration Certificate from Nikah Nama registration at Union Council through CRMS data entry to MRC issuance with QR code and CNIC marital status update

The NADRA Marriage Registration Certificate (MRC) is the official computerized proof that a marriage has been registered in Pakistan’s civil system. It is issued by Union Councils, TMAs, or Cantonment Boards — not by NADRA directly — after the Nikah Nama is registered and verified through NADRA’s Civil Registration Management System (CRMS). There is no public CNIC-based online system to check marriage records. Verification is done by scanning the QR code on the physical MRC, through the 12-digit tracking number at institutional level, or by contacting the issuing Union Council. The MRC fee is approximately PKR 100–300 at the Union Council. MOFA attestation is required for international use (spouse visa, immigration, foreign employment).

What Is a NADRA Marriage Certificate (MRC)?

The NADRA Marriage Certificate, formally called the Computerized Marriage Registration Certificate (MRC), is the official civil document proving that a marriage has been registered in Pakistan’s national system under the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, 1961.

The MRC confirms four things: the Nikah has been legally registered, the marriage record has been entered into NADRA’s CRMS database, identity data of both spouses has been verified against CNIC records, and a QR authentication code and 12-digit tracking number have been generated for the certificate.

Key distinction: The MRC is different from the handwritten Urdu Nikah Nama. The Nikah Nama is the religious marriage contract. The MRC is the government’s computerized registration of that contract. Most embassies, passport offices, and immigration authorities require the MRC, the Nikah Nama alone is usually not sufficient for official use.

The NADRA Marriage Registration Certificate (MRC) is the computerized government record of a marriage in Pakistan. It is issued by Union Councils, TMAs, or Cantonment Boards after verifying the Nikah Nama through NADRA’s Civil Registration Management System (CRMS). The MRC is required for spouse visa applications, passport updates, CNIC marital status changes, and inheritance matters.

The Nikah Nama must be obtained first. The MRC cannot be issued without a registered Nikah Nama. Think of it as: Nikah Nama → Union Council registration → CRMS verification → MRC issuance.

Who Issues the Marriage Registration Certificate?

Marriage certificates are issued by local government authorities, NOT by NADRA directly. NADRA maintains the CRMS database and verifies the records, but the physical certificate comes from:

• Union Councils (most common — covers most cities and towns)

• Tehsil Municipal Administrations (TMAs) (in certain jurisdictions)

• Cantonment Boards (for marriages within cantonment areas)

• Arbitration Council (Islamabad Capital Territory)

Marriage Registration Certificates are issued by Union Councils, TMAs, Cantonment Boards, or the Arbitration Council not by NADRA. NADRA maintains the centralized Civil Registration Management System (CRMS) and verifies records, but the issuing authority is the local government body where the Nikah was registered.

How to Register Your Marriage and Get the MRC (Step by Step)?

Step 1: Ensure the Nikah Nama is complete.

The Nikah Registrar (Nikah Khawan) prepares the Urdu Nikah Nama at the time of the Nikah ceremony. It must include: full names and CNIC numbers of both spouses, father’s names and CNIC numbers, Mahr amount, signatures of both spouses, signatures and CNIC numbers of two witnesses (one male, one female), and the Nikah Registrar’s signature, stamp, and CNIC.

Step 2: Submit the Nikah Nama to the Union Council.

Take the original Nikah Nama to the Union Council (or TMA / Cantonment Board) that has jurisdiction over where the marriage took place. Submit it along with: CNIC copies of both spouses, CNIC copies of both fathers, CNIC copy of the Nikah Registrar, two passport-size photographs of each spouse, and the registration application form.

Step 3: Union Council registers the marriage.

The UC Secretary verifies the Nikah Nama, checks CNIC details, and enters the marriage data into the CRMS terminal. This links the marriage to NADRA’s national civil registration database.

Step 4: Pay the fee.

The registration fee is approximately PKR 100–300 depending on the province and Union Council. Some UCs charge a separate certificate printing fee. The full cost is nominal typically under PKR 500 total including registration and certificate.

Step 5: Collect the computerized MRC.

The Union Council prints the computerized Marriage Registration Certificate. Processing takes 3–7 working days in most cases. The MRC contains: names and CNIC numbers of both spouses in Urdu and English, date and place of marriage, a QR authentication code, and a 12-digit tracking number.

Step 6: Update your CNIC marital status (recommended).

After collecting the MRC, visit a NADRA Registration Centre or use the Pak-ID app to update your marital status on your CNIC. This also updates your Family Registration Certificate (FRC). Fee: Rs 100 at NRC or USD 5 via PakID app.

To get a NADRA Marriage Registration Certificate, submit your original Nikah Nama with CNIC copies to the Union Council where the marriage took place. The UC verifies the documents, enters the data into NADRA’s CRMS system, and issues a computerized certificate with a QR code and 12-digit tracking number. Processing takes 3–7 working days. Fee is approximately PKR 100–300.

Can You Check a NADRA Marriage Certificate Online?

There is no public CNIC-based online system that allows anyone to search or check marriage records in Pakistan. Marriage records are protected under privacy laws and are not publicly searchable.

However, four official verification methods exist:

MethodHow It WorksWho Can Use It
QR Code ScanScan the QR code printed on the physical MRC using any smartphone camera. It links to NADRA’s CRMS system and confirms the certificate’s authenticity.Anyone with the physical certificate
12-Digit Tracking NumberThe tracking number on the MRC can be used by authorized institutions (embassies, courts) to pull the exact record from CRMS.Authorized institutions only — not public
Union Council Direct ConfirmationVisit the UC that issued the certificate. They can confirm the marriage record from their own register.Anyone — in person at the UC
Pak-ID App (FRC Method)Log in to id.nadra.gov.pk → apply for FRC → your spouse details, marriage date, and children appear on the Family Registration Certificate. This is the closest thing to an online marital status check. The CNIC holder only (own records)

There is no public CNIC-based online system to check marriage records in Pakistan. To verify a NADRA Marriage Registration Certificate, scan the QR code on the physical certificate, contact the issuing Union Council, or log in to the Pak-ID portal and apply for a Family Registration Certificate which shows spouse and marriage details.

Why no public online check? Marriage records contain sensitive personal data. Pakistan’s privacy framework restricts public access to civil registration records. The CRMS database is accessible only to authorized government institutions, not the general public.

What Is CRMS (Civil Registration Management System)?

CRMS stands for Civil Registration Management System. It is NADRA’s centralized digital database for all civil registration records in Pakistan including births, marriages, divorces, and deaths.

What CRMS does:

• Stores marriage records: When a Union Council registers a marriage, the data is entered into a CRMS terminal. This links the local registration to NADRA’s national database.

• Generates the computerized MRC: The MRC is printed from the CRMS system, which is why it has a standard format, QR code, and tracking number regardless of which Union Council issues it.

• Enables institutional verification: Embassies, courts, and authorized institutions can verify marriage records through CRMS using the certificate’s tracking number.

• Updates CNIC records: When you update your marital status on your CNIC, NADRA cross-references the CRMS marriage record.

CRMS portal: crms.nadra.gov.pk exists but is not accessible to the general public. It is an internal government system used by Union Council staff and authorized institutions.

CRMS (Civil Registration Management System) is NADRA’s centralized database for all civil registration records including marriages, births, divorces, and deaths. Union Councils enter marriage data into CRMS terminals, which generates the computerized Marriage Registration Certificate with QR code and tracking number. The CRMS portal at crms.nadra.gov.pk is not publicly accessible.

Always confirm the current fee at your specific Union Council before visiting.

How to Track Your Marriage Certificate Application?

After submitting your Nikah Nama for registration, tracking depends on the method used:

• 12-digit tracking number: If the Union Council provides a tracking number at submission, use it to follow up on processing status at the UC office.

• Pak-ID app (if applied online): For jurisdictions where online marriage registration is available through Pak-ID, track via the app under existing applications.

• Union Council in person: Visit the UC office with your receipt to check processing status. Processing typically takes 3–7 working days.

• NADRA helpline: Call 1777 or +92 51 111 786 100 with your tracking number for status updates.

The NADRA Marriage Registration Certificate is required for spouse visa applications to the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Gulf countries, and EU states. For international use, the MRC must be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and in most cases legalized by the destination country’s embassy in Pakistan. For domestic use (passport update, CNIC modification), MOFA attestation is not needed.

MOFA Attestation for International Use

For any use outside Pakistan, the MRC must be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

Urdu flow diagram showing MOFA attestation chain for NADRA Marriage Registration Certificate from Union Council issuance through Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation and embassy legalization to international use for visa and immigration

Step 1: Get the MRC from Union Council.

Ensure it has the QR code and tracking number.

Step 2: Submit to MOFA.

Visit a MOFA office (Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta) or MOFA camp office. Submit the original MRC with CNIC copies.

Step 3: Pay the MOFA attestation fee.

Approximately PKR 500–2,000. Varies by office.

Step 4: Collect attested MRC.

Processing takes 1–3 working days. Some camp offices offer same-day service.

Step 5: Embassy legalization (if required).

Some destination countries require the MOFA-attested MRC to be further legalized by their embassy in Pakistan. Check with the specific embassy.

Marriage Certificate for Overseas Pakistanis

Overseas Pakistanis who need to register a marriage or obtain an MRC from abroad have three options:

• Option 1: Through a representative in Pakistan. Appoint a family member or legal representative via a notarized and apostilled Power of Attorney. They submit the Nikah Nama to the Union Council, collect the MRC, get MOFA attestation, and courier it to you. See our detailed guide for the USA process.

• Option 2: During a visit to Pakistan. Submit the Nikah Nama in person at the relevant Union Council, pay the fee, and collect the MRC within 3–7 days. Get MOFA attestation before leaving Pakistan.

• Option 3: Marriage performed abroad. If the marriage (Nikah or civil ceremony) was performed outside Pakistan, the foreign marriage certificate must be apostilled (or embassy-attested), submitted to the relevant Union Council in Pakistan through a representative, registered, and then the MRC is issued.

NICOP holders: Overseas Pakistanis with a NICOP can update their marital status through the Pak-ID app (USD 5 fee, 2 days) after obtaining the MRC.

What If Your Nikah Was Never Registered?

If a Nikah was performed but the Nikah Registrar did not register it with the Union Council, or the registration was lost, you must complete late registration before the MRC can be issued.

• Step 1: Locate the original Nikah Nama. If lost, contact the Nikah Registrar who performed the ceremony — they are required to maintain a register of all marriages they solemnize.

• Step 2: Take the Nikah Nama to the Union Council. The UC will verify the document and register the marriage. Late registration may require confirmation from the Nikah Registrar, witness statements, or both.

• Step 3: After registration is complete, apply for the MRC through the normal process (Step 3 onwards in the registration section above).

• Late registration fee: May be higher than standard registration depending on the province and how much time has passed since the Nikah.

How to Get a Duplicate or Lost MRC?

If the original MRC is lost, damaged, or needs replacement:

• Visit the same Union Council that issued the original certificate. Request a duplicate. The UC retrieves the record from their register and CRMS.

• Required: Your CNIC and the marriage details (spouse name, approximate date of marriage). The 12-digit tracking number speeds up retrieval if you have it.

• Fee: Varies by Union Council — typically the same as the original issuance fee.

• Processing: Usually faster than the original since the record already exists in CRMS.

Can you download the MRC online? No. NADRA does not offer a public download of marriage certificates. The MRC is collected from the issuing Union Council. There is no PDF download option through Pak-ID for marriage certificates (unlike B-Form which appears in the ID Vault).

How to Check Marital Status Online

You cannot publicly search someone’s marital status using their CNIC number. But you can check your own marital status through the Pak-ID portal.

How to check your own marital status?

Step 1: Visit id.nadra.gov.pk or open the Pak-ID app.

Log in with your CNIC and OTP.

Step 2: Apply for a Family Registration Certificate (FRC).

Go to Family → FRC. The FRC shows your registered spouse’s name, marriage date, and children.

Step 3: Review your family tree.

If your marriage is registered in CRMS, your spouse will appear on the FRC. If no spouse appears, the marriage may not be registered in NADRA’s system yet.

Important: This shows only YOUR records you cannot check someone else’s marital status. Checking another person’s marriage status requires a lawful institutional request through the Union Council or courts.
